The Legend of the Lobster (or How the Lobster became a Rich Man’s Delicacy)

I once had an assignment that asked how the lobster became a delicacy of the rich man.  I didn’t have an answer and I was too lazy to research so I created a little poem that told the story… This is purely fiction so quoting it at a Red Lobster Poetry Slam will do nothing more than provide entertainment… Have fun!!

The Legend of the Lobster (or How the Lobster Became a Rich Man’s Delicacy)

Years ago in the village of New Acklam,
a bounty by the sea could be found.
The poor, hungry villagers would trek there
to search for food on the ground.

Large lobsters by the hundreds
much more than man could eat
were taken, oh so for granted,
and provided little of a treat.

Yet they scavenged for years upon years
preparing lobster in all soups and all dishes,
until young William John Adams picked one up that shined
and granted him three mighty wishes.

Young William wished for two things,
and long forgotten those wishes be.
But the third wish, oh that third wish,
changed his family, the village and the sea.

William wished for all the poor villagers
to never eat lobster again,
but instead have bountiful portions
not only of the sea but dry land.

The lobster granted his wishes
and the villagers ate from the land.
They forgot about their years of lobster
and always had plenty food at hand.

It was years later when William was older
and a father and grandfather he be,
that he told of the tale of the lobster
and that treasured day at the sea.

Yet as he spoke of that day,
that moment he praised so much,
he began to crave the white meat
that he had as a boy for lunch.

He wanted to taste another lobster,
as it had been so many years.
He walked to the ocean and searched,
yet his search only ended in tears.

What had he done? He was remorseful,
for those had been pleasant days.
As he sat on the beach on the rocks
he saw something coming his way.

It was a boy he saw walking
with a large pack upon his back.
He noticed the pack had movement
and so asked what was in the sack.

“A lobster, a large lobster,”
the young, curious boy replied.
It was to feed his poor family,
his family of quite large size.

William gleamed with excitement
and offered to pay for the sack.
But the boy refused greatly
for he had no other food to take back.

William had grown into wealth
from hard work or a wish he had gained.
So he offered the boy and his family
a lifetime of fortune and fame.

He paid the boy for the lobster
enough to feed plenty for months.
Then he and the boy worked together
to catch lobsters for others to munch.

The lobsters were few to be found
and costly to seek and to catch.
Yet those who hadn’t tasted the meat were curious
and paid greatly for a batch.

The taste they grew very fond of,
The texture, they begged for more.
It was the boy on the beach with the lobster
whose family opened a store.

They sold only to the wealthy
and gave profits to the poor.
Their fame spread through the Northeast,
Through the country and the world.

So lobsters today aren’t many,
their value is highly prized.
And now William John Adams is famous
and in New Acklam immortalized!

Moses P. Diddy Hall saw his shadow today…

I’ve always been curious to know… If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow in Punxsutawney, PA does that affect me where I live?… Does Phil speak for a whole nation?? Can it not be that if Phil sees his little groundhog shadow in Pennsylvania then more winter is predicted for Pennsylvania and not anywhere else.  To me that only makes sense….

We don’t happen to have a groundhog lying around the house but we do have Moses P. Diddy Hall.  Otherwise known as Moe, our family dog.  He is similar in size to a groundhog and has about the same cuteness factor, so I figured he could represent the southern part of the US… or at least Kentucky… well, maybe Lexington… okay, just our house, but if Moe and Phil are on the same page then I am convinced that Phil can be a groundhog that speaks for a whole nation. However, if they weren’t in agreement to the coming weather then Phil is on his own in the future…

Moses P. Diddy Hall stepped out on the porch… Punxsutawney Phil stepped out of this cage.(are you feeling the tension?) On the back porch Moe’s shadow edged into the yard… In Pennsylvania, Phil saw his shadow once again…There is more winter to be seen at our house and in Pennsylvania so we’ll just say that means winter for the entire nation..

Moe did his Groundhog Day job and I’m proud of him,  but since he and his groundhog counterpart saw eye to eye then Moe is released of his duties of weather prediction from this day forward…I guess maybe this proves that groundhogs are a weatherman’s best friend. …

No More No Bake Cookies!!

Three things I remember about school lunches…

  • Chili must be served with an orange half
  • Friday is fish day (although that changed somewhere in my school years)
  • No bake cookies are delicious

No bake cookies are delicious and with peanut butter and oats they are practically health food! (I’m justifying here)  It is winter, cold and laid back at our house.. No bake cookies are the health food/comfort food of choice so I made a double batch.  My daughter went to get one tonight and said, “What?? There is only one left!??!!”  My husband said, “I’ve not even had one.”  Whatever I was doing at the moment I did it with greater intensity and focus and chewed that no bake cookie in my mouth faster.  I was guilty.  No, I didn’t completely eat two batches of cookies by myself….. although I have no doubt that I could have easily done so… I had little helpers but it was definitely a reminder of how easily I fall to temptation that seems so innocent.  What could possibly be wrong with no bake cookies?  Nothing really with a couple, but with 76 we are talking about overdoing for sure…

My lesson- No bake cookies are not for making and having in the house.  They are to be taken to Super Bowl Parties and game nights, etc…. If it is tempting then I need to keep it away from me.. that is the lesson learned

I am so happy that the Super Bowl is tomorrow night… wonder what I should  take to the party?? I hope I have enough peanut butter…………..

I’m not a Walrus.. Kookookachoo… but it wouldn’t be the worst thing

arctic-tale

My 6 year-old and my 16 year-old and I watched An Arctic Tale tonight…Here is what I learned:

  • Don’t mess with a Walrus…
  • Walruses have a lot of personality…..
  • Walruses aren’t designed for mountain climbing…..
  • You can’t hide from a polar bear under the snow.. they can smell what is under at least three feet of snow
  • If your group is caught between a fox and a hard place a leap of faith inspires the whole flock
  • An itch is an itch and an itch must be scratched no matter where that itch may be
  • A 6 year-old might not be suited for watching cute little arctic animal die..
  • Baby Narwhals, no matter how small, just aren’t cute…
  • Big arctic animals are scary and some are downright creepy…
  • Wildlife cameramen have incredible jobs…
  • I would never want to be a wildlife cameraman (they get really close to big scary arctic animals and they film cute little arctic animals dying)
  • Instincts of wild animals are amazing to observe…
  • Instinct looks a lot like love and nurturing…
  • As Creator, God thought of blubber, camouflage, instinct,  tools like claws and tusks…. those are for those arctic animals

Luke 12:6-7

6 “What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins[b]? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. 7 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Those are the words of Jesus.. He wasn’t talking to Polar Bears, Walruses, or Narwhals… He was talking to those around him who were listening about not being afraid of what would happen to them when they trusted in Him….

In Arctic Tale I saw a walrus protect her baby, a polar bear search for food and other animals do things that were pretty extrordinary, but I never saw any of them not attempt something because of worry or fear… We have the “tools” of intelligence and reason yet we tend to lack trust in One who values us more than those animals he equips…

Maybe the trust of a walrus is what God is looking for in me and what I need to have……….kookookachoo

Osmond Flashback… I’m a little bit American Idol…

I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock n’ roll .. I’m a little bit Memphis n’ Nashville, With a little bit of Motown in my soul….

Okay, I’m admitting it… My name is Nancy and I am a recovering Osmond fan.  In my tween years I fell into the later years of the the Osmond era…the era that focused on Donny and Marie… I became a fan of purple (Donny’s Favorite) I knew every word to their songs, knew all the brother’s names and trivial bits of info about each one, had the dolls and the stage…

American Idol tonight brought back those memories when an Osmond’s son, Allan’s son, to be exact, auditioned.  I’m not so sure my girls will get on the Osmond bandwagon but I’d vote for him.

Greg the Rabbit also might get my vote… I know, I know… He didn’t really audition and his friend that he was rooting on didn’t make it to the next round…but how cool would it be to always have a 6 foot pink rabbit as your personal cheerleader? I wonder if the pink bunny’s buddy made it through to Hollywood if the Grabbit would get to tag along?  If I had a Greg the Rabbit I would name him Osmond… and he’d be purple.

Deceiving Beauty

Electricity out for many, temporary shelters set up to house those who don’t have heat…. That is what my town and surrounding area is like today.  Amazing how something so beautiful can cause so much grief… Hmmmm, much like sin.  Many times it seems so harmless, even beautiful,000_0010 but the grief it causes …. well, you get the picture000_0016

Snow Storms and No School and Ice, Oh My!

I am a kid at heart.  As an adult, even before I had children I can remember getting up in the morning on a snowy day and being happy for the kids who didn’t have school due to the weather.  I don’t know why it pleased me so much.  Maybe it was the fun that I imagined the kids having or maybe it was the fact that the world had to slow down and step out of the routine or most likely it is the fact that nature doesn’t go by man’s schedule.

God ordained man to take care of the earth… to be a good steward of it… to be “green.”  Jesus may have had power over nature but we as men can only be stewards of it…. It puts us in our place whether it be changing a precious schedule, creating unexpected and much needed family time,  humbling humanity as we watch pain and heartache from destruction or standing in awe at the beauty of a snow and ice covered scene….
I’m hoping for the storm to arrive.. a few inches of snow, a cup of hot chai tea latte and kids snuggled in their beds… I’m watching and waiting and thankful for the beauty of nature in all of its forms…..

Squirrel Appreciation Day

I found out today that beginning nine years ago, January 21st marks the annual Squirrel Appreciation Day.  I don’t know that I have ever appreciated a squirrel.  Hmmm….I’m not even sure I know how to appreciate a squirrel.   Baby squirrels are pretty cute… well, after they get some hair …   Is that appreciation?  There I said it… I appreciate baby squirrels.  Now what do I do?  Chocolates? A card?  baby-squirrel

Happy New President’s Day

Happy New President’s Day!

Inauguration

Disclaimer:  This is an unbiased entry…..I couldn’t care less about politics.  However, I’ve heard it said that you shouldn’t  discuss politics or religion unless you want an argument.  I can’t say I want an argument but…… I’m gonna do both so fasten the seatbelt!

Today was a far more heartwarming experience that I had expected.  Watching our new President take the oath of office had great meaning today.  I thought about the elderly African-American generation who thought that they would never see this day.  I thought about the young African-American children, particularly little boys,  who will have a hope now that some of us can’t truly imagine anyone not having in the first place.  I thought about the prayer of Rick Warren and the prayer of Rev. Joseph Lowery… different but both to God and both in support of our new leader and his family.  It should have been an incredible day of excitement for a community of people who have watched a country change it’s racial ignorance and intolerance into something quite beautiful… but for some it wasn’t.

Politics are one of my least favorite things in the world.  I think the whole political arena stinks  because good people tend to dwell on it.  They let it turn them into either cynics, zealots, or apathetic bystanders.  It seems to divide people.. just listen to talk radio.  It is not the radio personalities that cause the division, they are just voicing the extremes of the political view and platform…. Okay, maybe they do stir it up, but it is on both sides of the fence.

How can we expect world peace or solve true problems if  there is no common denominator.  Some of the “right side” are  already looking for ways to find fault in our new President… from complaining about socialism to how much was spent on the Inaugural Ball.  Yet they are not alone, some of the “left side” are holding onto the hate that they too have been throwing out at leadership over the past few years… I see articles and blogs making fun of those who think differently or have moral convictions of their own…… And you know what I find funny?   I’m talking about Christians…..or maybe I’m talking to Christians….

If asked the many of the questions I think we would find that no one wants our country terrorized, no one wants babies dead, no one wants people to starve or freeze to death because they have nothing…. Now there may be some who are truly ruthless and care about no one but themselves but I would have to think that most people truly want the same thing it is just the route taken to get there is where the difference is…

It seems only reasonable that it is up to the Christian community… the people who follow Christ, pray to Him and serve Him… that we put our “route takens” on the back burner and make this a time to stop the cycle that spins every four or eight years …. the world will continue the name calling, blaming, manipulating and disrespecting….I’m a total believer that without God seated at the tables of our homes or at the tables of the leaders of our country and our world, there will never be any peace.  I don’t think it is possible without God.   What should we do?????

Love one another-

1 John 3: 11-24

11This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

“Buster”

Sometimes I crack myself up.   You know when you say something funny and even if others don’t get it you find it incredibly humorous?  Maybe you can relate.

Last night I had a good laugh in the car. It has been quite some time since I have been in high school and on occasion I see people who haven’t seen me for years. Some recognize me, others don’t. I stopped the other night to get a Diet Coke on my way home from church and as I walked in the store I recognized a guy whom I had known in school. We might have had a class or been in a school club together and we both had sport and school faculty connections but we didn’t really hang out with the same crowd.  I can’t say we were truly friends but more like good acquaintances.

Anyway, being the socially sanguine person that I am not, I bypassed him and made my way to the drink cooler.  I kept one eye on the cooler and one eye on the counter.  He was still in line.  It is not that I didn’t want to be friendly but I just didn’t want to go through the whole process of awkward chit-chat which I have experienced before.  So I peered over the Little Debbies to see if he was gone, and I don’t know what the man in front of him was doing but it was taking forever and he was still there waiting.

I was tired of looking and waiting so I moseyed over to take my place in line behind “Buster” (Not his actual name… really).  I began feeling a bit uncomfortable because I felt like such a jerk not saying anything and the guy in front of him was still doing what he was doing that was taking forever……..So I very quietly, just in case it wasn’t him, mumbled a soft, “Buster”.  I could tell that he had heard me because he slightly looked to his right and scouted to see who said his name but then turned back around.   So, I upped my volume a tiny bit and uttered, “Buster,” one more time.  This time he turned around completely to see if someone was saying his name.  When he turned he obviously didn’t recognize me so rather than be offended I decided it was time to have some fun.   I quietly said his name again and when he looked around I just happened to be looking the other way. And then again and again…………Okay, I didn’t really do that… the second time I said his name I also made a point to grab his sleeve.  He really didn’t recognize me but when I reintroduced myself he was actually pretty friendly.

He left.  I got back into my car and on the way home I began thinking about that whole “how funny it could have been” situation… I chuckled pretty much all the way home.

Who’s calling your name?  Has it been too long? Would you recognize the voice?

“He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” John 10:3b (NIV)
